The Invisible Chase
Nothing is broken. The career is real, and the life, by any measure, is a good one. And still something underneath keeps you moving.

The chase
“Something in me won't stop.”
You reached the thing. Several of them. Each time, the relief lasted a day, perhaps a week, and then the gap reappeared a little further along the road, still just out of reach. So you kept going, because going is what you know how to do.
The Constraint looks at this through the business. The Chase looks at it through the person: why we keep striving long after we have arrived, and what that striving quietly takes out of us. The sleep. The presence at dinner. The Monday you used to love.
The chase is rational. The premise behind it is the problem.
Most chases look different on the surface (money, status, approval, productivity, perfection, control) and are identical underneath. They are built on a belief absorbed so early it feels like truth: I am not yet enough. Every achievement quiets it for a while. None of them answer it, because it was never a question achievement could answer.
Before anything else
Nothing is wrong with you.
That is not a reassurance. It is the argument, and everything here rests on it.
The over-preparing, the softened sentence, the conflict postponed, the standard nobody could meet: these are what you get when you believe the future can be made better than it is, and you cannot know which future will arrive. That gap, between wanting something and not being able to guarantee it, is where every hedge is born.
So the thing you have been calling a flaw is the price of having hoped for something. It protects what you already have, and it lies to you about helping. I am not going to try to remove it. What I offer instead is a way of seeing it clearly enough that it stops running the show.
In practical terms
What actually happens
- Twenty-four conversations across six months, one a week, about ninety minutes, longer when it needs to be.
- A question or two between conversations , written in your own words. The week between is where most of the work happens. Every question has a floor, a three-sentence version that is still worth bringing.
- The hour is yours. It usually begins with what you wrote, then goes wherever things are live: a decision you are sitting on, a conversation you are avoiding, something you are trying to build. Business and life are not kept in separate rooms.
- Write to me whenever you like between conversations. I read everything, and answer when I have something worth saying.
- Nothing is timed, graded or chased. There is no version of this in which you are behind.
What this does not do
- It will not make you more productive. Several people have become slower for a while. I think that is correct.
- It is not therapy, and I am not a therapist. If something needs clinical help, I will tell you so.
- It does not work by encouragement. Nothing here will tell you that you are enough. You will arrive at it in your own handwriting, or not at all.
What it costs
for the six months
Half to begin. That half is your commitment, and it matters more than it looks. These conversations will take us both into uncomfortable places. When they do, commitment is what keeps us there. The other half comes at the end, if you feel the work was worth it.
How to begin
Write to arrange a first conversation.
Tell me a little about what is going on, in as many or as few words as you like. I will write back to find a time for us to talk. That first conversation has no charge, and I will not be selling you anything in it.
