The Invisible
Truth
Nowhere to go. Nothing to prove. Nothing to win.
He checks the balance before he opens his eyes.
The number is good. By any reasonable measure, the number has been good for years. He knows this. He knows it the way a person knows a fact that has not yet reached the interior.
The number is good. The feeling is not.
The book
Fifteen chases, and one sentence they all arrive at
The Invisible Truth is a work of literary non-fiction. Each chapter examines one human chase — for money, for status, for approval, for control, and eleven others like them — and the invisible framework operating beneath it.
Each chase is different on the surface and identical in its structure. Every chapter begins somewhere new, and every chapter ends with the same sentence. By the fifteenth time it appears, it should feel less like an idea you are being handed and more like something you have always, somewhere, known.
The book does not tell you to stop chasing, or argue that the chase is costing you. It makes visible what was invisible. What you do with that seeing is entirely your own.

The Arrival
How this book began
I did not arrive at the book's central insight from study, though the study came later and confirmed it. I arrived at it during six or seven years of medical difficulty, a period that came precisely when the world expected me to be accelerating, and during which I could not perform.
The insight arrived unexpectedly, in a routine conversation with my doctor that had nothing to do with the subject:
When the infinite can validate your existence, why do you spend your life waiting for the mortals to do it?
From that moment, something loosened. Not all at once. The chasing did not stop overnight; old machinery does not. But I could see it for the first time. This book is what I have learned about the machinery since then. Not instructions for dismantling it. An invitation to see it clearly, which, in my experience, is the only thing that actually changes it.
